I had an oil service done the other day at my dealer. Afterwards I noticed a sort of scraping noise from the area around the shifter when the car was coasting at 30 MPH or so. It would stop if I hit either the brakes or the gas. It wasn't noticeable at higher speed and didn't affect performance at all. I called the service dept and they thought it was some insulation rubbing on the drive shaft. Sounded like a reasonable explanation to me. Today they came to pick up the car. This morning the noise was considerably quieter, although you could still hear it. They called me later and said they couldn't hear it at all. I told them under what circumstances it was most noticeable and they said they would try it and get back to me.
To make a long story short, they didn't find any problem, but they said they would put some noise insulation around one of the drive shaft bearing mounts. This concerns me because it seems they're just hiding the symptom and not trying to find the problem. Has anyone else heard such a noise when coasting?
