what car does the 3.91 LSD come from? what is its torque limit?

The 325is has the 3.91 lsd, and it probably came off of that.

My car has 167 lb-ft torque at the crank, so it's handling limit is WELL over 150 lb-ft.

no it doesnt. if your cars a manual it has a 3.73. auto's had 4.10's. i believe 3.91's are a small case diff from a 318.

its possible but ive never heard of an e36 3.91. obviously e36 cases dont fit in the e30 subframe anyway. i believe the 3.91 is a small case 318 unit and wont hold up to the m20 for very long. im not an expert by any means on e36's but i feel pretty confident in e30 knowledge.
