If you take it to a car wash where you use the pressure hose and everything - nothing bad can really happen and definitely shouldn't. For wax, I always use meguiars products. I know a lot of people use the expensive stuff around here - talk to mr. elussive...
I totally agree with epj3. I have used Meguiars products exclusively for almost 10 years. The quality and performance is excellent. I have tried products 3, 4 and 5x more expensive, and I always go back to Meguiars.
I noticed that when I use a rag with hot water, or an actual dash cleaner, I can never keep a good grip on the towel, rag, swiffer, whatever cloth is used because of the rubbery material that the dashboard consists of.
I have one of the mini California dusters (bought at Target) and it does a great job removing dust from my dash and every place else. I just keep it under my seat and use it whenever. 303 Aerospace protectant applied to the interior vinyl when I clean my interior keeps everything looking great.
I don't have my X3 yet but I just take my Freelander to Water Works or The Hub. If you don't have any of these places in your town you're missing out. For $10-$15 you get the exterior of the car hand-cleaned and the inside dusted and it takes about 15min. Of course they have more expensive packages where they will Armor All the interior and and exterior plastics, they can wax it, put tire shine....all that good stuff. I've asked the peolpe at The Hub and they use Meguiars products so I know it's good stuff.
Call me lazy but don't knock it 'till you try it. I've taken my cars there for the past 6 years and never had an incident of them scratching or denting them. The Hub even has a restaurant where you can hang out and eat a nice meal while your car gets washed.
For about $25 you get a nice meal and a sparkly new car all in about 30min!

Does anyone know of a real good product to clean the rims of the X3. Unfortunately, due to the nasty winter in the East Coast, alot of the brake dust seemed to fuse with my rims. Just yesterday I finally had the opportunity to clean and detail my X3 that I could not get all the brake dust off the rims.
