I have a 1988 325is with 166,000 miles and was wandering, what kidn of oil should i use? It burns a very little amount of oil, especially considering the mileage and age.

I was just wandering what kind of oil would be best??

I put Valvolive Max Life in my car last time and i could actually tell that the engine runs smoother, starts up faster and sounds better. I am due for my change again, so i will see what it looks like. i recommend it.

Use Synthetic 10w40 and you'll be fine. BMW have a contract with Castrol so will "recommend" them. as long as you use an equivelent spec oil theres no problem. FYI E39 M5's have to use 10w60 oil otherwise the warranty for the engine is VOID!!!! an funny how the only place to get it here is from BMW at £26 per litre!!!

But using a synthetic after only using dino oil will make the engine burn oil. Synthetic cleans up the deposits that dino oil won't remove, which can cause smoking. I dont want it to burn more oil.

Are you using synthetic, or regular.
And how long have you owned the car, and/or used this oil??

I'm asking because I'm in a similar stuation.
