wheel bearings

has anyone replaced their rear wheel bearings before?

i'm going off of the bentley manual here, and it doesn't seem too nasty except for repeated phrases such as: 'some special tools may be required. if you don't have adequate time or space, it may be better to have a BMW dealership perform this maintenance'

so....do i have to buy a puller from advance auto parts for 2 bucks? or do i need some special 70 dollar gizmo from Germany?

in terms of difficulty, is this procedure on par with a water pump replacement, or a clutch job?

i'm tired of these strange grinding noises!

Getting the bearing out is a bloody mission without a decent puller, and even then. Also, don't even try removing the large locking nut without a rattle gun. Plus you need a very very decent torque wrench to do it up.

So, yes it is a bloody pain in the arse job, but doable. So much easier with the trailing arm out of the vehicle, esp if you plan on doing it without a puller. Need hammer swinging room. (I don't recommend doing it this way, but you can).

Not trying to put you off, but the warnings in the bentley are there for a reason.

I've never done one, never had to... but I've read up on how to do them, and they're on the list with "rear subframe bushings" and "rebuilding engine" on the "Things I won't do" list. Good luck, let us know how it goes if you do it yourself.

Iv done engine swaps, clutch jobs and struts/shocks and springs and i took my car to my Big O to have them do it. It's a PAIN! For a good shop it's a 2 hour job per side.
