I am buying some 17" x 7.5" rims for my 85 325e with an offset of ET +40. I was told that I will need 15mm hub centric spacers. But do I need 15mm spacers for both the front and rear wheels or only the rear? Thanks in advance.

Definately need them for th efront and even if they fit they will look ridiculous on the rear that far inside the guards.

You are better off buying wheels the correct offest as spacers are not legal in all jurisdictions, add to unsprung weight, and wrong offset wheels (as I was reminded by big daddy the other day) put all sorts of strain on your suspension components.

That said plenty of people run them without too much problem, but yes you need spacers on both front and rear.

P.S. you may find that you need somewhere between a 15mm and 20mm spacer too with 7.5" wide rims - it'll depend on how low your car is and the exact wheel and tyre design.

A 15mm spacer should be adequate for the 40 offset.
Though be aware that not only does spacers have the possibility of causing damage to suspension components as Graham noted, they also can cause problems to wheel bearings (will shit old, slightly already worn bearings) with the extra stress of the spacer, can also cause vibrations at high speed if not machined properly.
Peace!

I have to agree with the above comments, it is MUCH better to buy properly fit wheels than to use spacers. You might save a few dollars with generic fit wheels, but the odds are good that you will wind up paying for it via maintenance, tire wear, etc.
