Wheel offset / backspacing

Hello
I have a 1988 M3 and I want to get 17" wheels for it.

Can anyone tell what is the appropriate wheel backspacing is for this car.

Also what would be the parameters if I use a wheel with spacers,ie. the max spacer size.

The Honolulu BMW dealer (the parts Dept.) is worthless!!

Any info ..greatly appreciated!!

Yeah,

Originally I was planning to buy new wheels.

Now I have decided to keep my set of factory M5 "Throwing Star" wheels. Which I have never installed.

I was wondering what the max tire size I can run on the rear?

The car is stock, not lowered.
