I was thinking of going to a low profile tire on 17" rims. I still have the stock 14's on it now. Any comments on better ride, etc.? I've been looking at several tire manufacturing companies and not sure what size I need to put on if I go to that big of a wheel.

Thanks guys,
Steve

17" will give a worse ride - quite harsh. But improved turn-in. Go for lightwieght ones if you can as 17" are much heavier than the factory alloys which are quite light for e30.

As for tyres 205/40/17 or 205/45/17 are both within 5% of the factory size which is the commonly accepted max allowable difference.

as Grahm mentioned: if you plus size the rims, you have to consider how much weight you are putting on, especially for the brakes.
oh and lower profile tires = better handling, bumpier ride usually.

just to double check Graham, 205/40/17?? sure its not 205/50/17? 205/40, or even 205/45 seems awfully short for a sidewall. but this assumption is based on the fact that i run 225/45/17 for my winters.

yup, 205/45/17 is 1.2% larger than stock 195/65/14. 205/40/17 is 2.2% smaller. so the 45's are better but some tyre brands don'tr stock both so pick your tyre and then see what size you can get.

I run Dunlop SP Sport Maxx with 205/45/17. Previously had Dunlop SP 9000 DSST's 205/40/17.

If you want to go to 215's (not recommended - too much tramlining for me, but it will depend on the type of tyre and road conditions you have) then you want 215/40/17.
