I would like to get a concensus on what gasoline BMW owners use and why. I know that each gasoline manufacturer puts their own additives in for different reasons. I have been using Sunoco for many years but I'm not sure if I'm getting the best performance I can in both my 525 and 325. Actually, both cars seem to run fine on Sunoco 89, 91 & 93, but truthfully, I would'nt know what to look for anyway. I appreciate any answers from the group. Thanks guys & gals.

I run BP 93 octane and she drives great... I don't think gas matters so long as it's premium. If you like Sunoco I would stick with it, occassionally I use Sunoco if I can't find a BP...

Gas brand does matter. yes, it comes "from the same place" but the brands put different additives in it, filter it different/better ways, etc. I never really noticed a difference between brands, but if there are scientists (top tier - which tom posted quite a while ago) who measure the quality of gasoline and are paid by bmw, gm, toyota, and honda...their results are good enough for me [hihi]

I'm pretty sure I read BP and sunoco are good too... if i can't find a shell, i go with sunoco or BP too.

I noticed that Sunoco now supplies fuel to Nascar..Hmmmm, I wonder if they know something. I am a proponent of Sunoco Ultra 94. I have used it for years. There is an ethanol component of up to 10% in all Sunoco (canadian) fuels. Our sulphur regulations call for less than 30 ppm sulphur...this stuff works fine in my M-50 with a conforti chip in it

My x3 runs fine on any 91 octain gas so I buy the cheapest. It's my way of telling the rest of the stations in this town to keep their prices in line with the market.

Doesn't your manual call for 91 octane? If not your car is running fine because your knock sensor combined with your OBC II system is compensating for the low octane in the fuel. The car is not performing to standards and in the long run will suffer!

If you look on the Dinan website there is an archive of articles written by Steve Dinan. One is about dyno testing. He proves that a 2 octane decrease in gasoline (from 93 to 91, for example) can cost you about 17 hp @ peak RPM..its kinda interesting if your into that sorta thing...Hmmm he seems to know what he's talking about, and most certainly has BMW expertise....
