The other day my car decided it didn't want its standard transmission oil and dumped it all over the road all at once.

Does anyone have an ideas of what happenned?

i talked to Jared at Pelican Parts and he told me i might have a crack or a hole, and that my rear seal is most likely not the problem.

I hope its not too big of a problem.

:(

...and you hope that it's not too big of a problem. Uh, I think that you're in for a terrible suprise.

Crawl underneath and take a look for yourself. Maybe the drain plug just came out (best case scenerio).

theres a seal for your main shaft into your transmission (from engine). If that blew you will have to remove your transmission to replace it. (probably what happened)

can you see where it is dripping from? (or dripped/poured from) Is it coming out of where the tranny meets the engine?

or is it coming out of the rear where pelican man said it might have?

that's your best first step. If it's leaking, it's coming from somewhere. If you can't figure it out, put more fluid in there and try again. This time find out where it's coming from.

Regardless of where it's coming from, you're looking at most likely pulling the tranny. It's more a matter of whether you're looking at a transmission replacement or not.

If you don't have the time/patience/tools/skills to pull the transmission yourself, it's time to flatbed it to a shop.

Its coming from the rear tail of the transmission..... thats the only area that is wet, the rest of the tranny (ahead of that towards engine) is dry.

its tough to tell also because my engine leaks and splashes everywhere.

Like everyone else said, clean up the tranny, fill it up and check it.
Run it around the block at a low speed and check it. If its "dumping" again, you will
know where its coming from.
Check the conditon of the guibo? Is it still servicable?
Take care of the leak in the engine too.

Happy Motoring:)

17 mm sounds about right. now i gotta scrub and steam clean all day tomorrow and then go in the evening and buy an allen wrench, and see where the problem is.

i don't beleive that pelican parts guy. its wet and clean (clean as in the caked up grime was washed away) around the tail of the transmission for a reason.

i put red line in mine and it leaks. guy at the local shop said red line will find a way out. but that was the only seal i didnt replace before installing the tranny. think i should do it or do you think i should use another lube like the shop guy recommended?

WEll i dumped the tranny oil and filled the transmission with fresh oil, and all it does is leave small puddles around wherever i park it. So.... i dunno... maybe that big puddle of oil at the stop sign wasn't mine or maybe it was? or maybe the fresh oil is thicker and doesn\t get out as easily. I don't know. I am going to go under the car and check for leaks, i'll keep you updated.

thanks

i am not sure... with research i have read that sometimes running synthetic in cars can have strange effects. It can leak out of places strangely, or not work as efficiently as a regular oil. Do this: replace the seal (why not?) run synthetic, seee if it leaks.

from what i understand the rear seal isn't too hard to replace.

Drain oil. You remove the driveshaft, remove the guibo, pull out the flange in the tranny (may or may not need a gear puller). Pull the rear seal out, insert new seal. Reverse.

Good Luck

Yeah easy? Have fun with the Guibo.
If you can do it, it is so much fun. Inspect everything you remove. Bushings, gasket, etc...
This is the best time to replace other parts.
If you cant do it yourself, local BMW "CERTIFIED" shop.

My exhaust doesn't run below the transmission so i actually have plenty of room. So it shouldn;t be too hard ofa problem. I don't understand this guibo business, why would it be so ahrd to remove the guibo? i took a look and its just 6 bolts, you can use a a ratchet and a flat wrench. All you need to do is support the front wheels from moving, support one rear wheel off the ground with a jack stand so you can rotate one tire, and that way you can make the drive shaft spin and remove the gubo.

easy.

yeah, i dont understand why people insist the guibo is hard to remove, wtf.
bimmerforums has a "how to remove driveshaft" like thats a hard thing to do... idiots
i dont think you need to remove the exhaust to get the shielding off either.... but if so, all you need are a heck of a lot of extentions and UJ at the end.
