Why does the M3 Driver do that?

Guys:

It's really not a big deal but I think I'll just bring this up.

It's Sunday 3:00 PM in Southern California, I decide to take my 360 for a spin.

On a mild traffic light stop, I get myself in the #1 lane (slow lane), and notice there’s a silver BMW M3 convertible (current E46 model) w/ 3 guys in it on #2 lane. I did not pay attention to the car nor the people in it, just sipping my coffee.

However, when the traffic moves along, I was doing about 50mph (still on the slow lane). The M3 was far behind due to the mild traffic. I noticed that M3 gunned the throttle and moved behind me. And all in the sudden, it's like he is going to rear-end my 360 on purpose. Of course when he gets close to my rear end, the driver merges to #2 lane than cut off to my lane and fled. I would assume he was going at least 110mph when he was far ahead of me.

I didn't slow down when the M3 passed by, just kept speed. I did down-shift a gear and slow down a bit after the M3 passed by to watch his success cutting off a Ferrari.

Man if I was in my 540i, I might have gunned and eat that thing for lunch. I just don't have the mood for that car while driving the Ferrari.

The Question is, what makes that M3 to do that? To show that he is outran the Ferrari? Or just simply to "REPRESENT"? [paranoid]

I would just drive normal and compliment the car if I were him, it would easy since he drives a convertible and my window was down.... I would give the M3 driver a smile and a thumbs up.

Like I said, this is really not a big deal, just a bit odd, please no negative comments, I was just wondering about the M3 driver's motivation.

Your comments?

I think you are being a little stereotypic by referring to why M3 driver's do that. This question would have been better worded if you directed towards the broader crowd.

He could have been just trying to have a little fun with his buddies, who knows? The Ferrari Modena is a nice car, but nothing to get overly wild for or risking an accident.

people become haters when they get hot cars like an m3, and they hate on the people who have hotter cars. good thing he didn't run into you, i would've personally been upset.

but tom is probably right, just some fun with the buddies and probably wanted to see you gun him down.

I don't agree. I almost never see am M3, 911, and BMW, Audi or MB for that matter driving like idiots. What I find far more common is those in cars like Saturn and others appearing to be trying to prove something (trying to compensate???).

There are a few new M3's around my area and 1 vert that I follow to work and the actions seem out of character for these people and more common among a different class of car driver.

i also agree with that. but there's always a bad couple of dudes within the lot of bmw drivers. think of all those idiots who give their m3's back to the dealer with only 2k miles on them cause they already got bored with the car. it was definately not "one of us"

I don't think it's coz' they got bored with the car. Many of those kinda people you are refering to, were too impulsive and just wanted to own the M3. Without realizing that they couldn't really afford one! I'm pretty sure drivers who know what they want, wouldn't be bored so fast with the M3, and would want to enjoy it for a while, Unless, they upgrade to a better car, like a M5, Porsche, etc.

I just think you ran into what is generally referred to as an as*h*le. They're out there and they drive all kinds of cars (and boats).
I noticed you are so concerned that you posted this on at least 2 sites. Don't let it get to you.
I just don't get the "represent" part!!
If this is your first idiot my heart goes out to you. You will probably deal with a few more in your lifetime.
My only b*tch is that it was a BMW driver (I'd like to think we're better than that)

I would just say that you shouldn't think that your 360 is the fastest car too. The M3 is not much slower. And it would probably keep up with you all the way. Maybe not with 3 people in the car.

Anyway your post is weird.

M3 Convertible would not keep up, an M3 Coupe would keep up for a little while. But it's a 400hp V8 under the hood vs BMW's 333hp I6....Ferrari would be faster after 60mph.
I think the guy just went up your ass, hoping to get a response from you. I go absolutely apeshit when I see a Ferrari 360. One time I saw one from really far away and I wanted to get a better look, so I went 80 in a 25 zone just to catch up to it (not that the Ferrari was going anywhere near 80, I was just so far away and I wanted to get up close and personal), but at the same time, my neighbor has a 360 Spider. I guess I'm just an idiot.

Speaking of Ferraris, I just saw a Ferrari Challenge Stradale on my way home from school today (summer class) !!!! It was sooo crazy, they were two middle aged black guys (not being racist, just describing), it looked so freaking sick !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
