My dad is impressed with my 2000 528it but feels it might need more power (based on his previous experience with a 325xit). The 540it is to much $. He's looking into a newer model year and we are wondering why BMW went to the 2.5 litre. Less power and torque than the 2.8 litre. Any input? Thanks.

Probably because it is about 6-7k cheaper and people enjoy paying less for the BMW logo.

However, the 2.5 engine isn't neccessarily underpowered.....[burnout]

it is a marketing story i believe. they have 530. a 528 would be placed too close. i believe that with 525 and 530 the main money is made as far as 5 series is concerned. your cash cows have to be seperated clearly to attrect as many people as possible.
powerwise the 525 is really not too much of a difference to the 528.

525 is not a replacement for a 528i. 530i is a replacement model of 528i. 525 is more like a new configuration. But the engine in general is a replacement for 2.3l and the 3.0l is a replacement of 2.8l. The 525i or touring has 192hp and I think for regular driving is great and reliable.

So you don't compare the 2.5 with 2.8.

As they don't offer the 330i touring they do not offer the 530i touring in US. But they offer 540i touring! [screwy]

As Wadula said the power is almost same. Only 1hp difference.

Why not get the 525i touring and transplant the S60 engine?[burnout]
