Z3 Diff Noise?

Has anyone else had problems with their rear diff? I have a minor but annoying whine that come from my rear diff area (though it could be a wheel bearing?) when decelerating from 83-80mph and again from 40-35 mph. You don't hear it when the speed is steady, or when accelerating. I brought it to my mechanic and he said its not a big deal since the fluid level is correct and the fluid looks clean (had it changed anyway), but I'm just wondering if the diff is a weak link that I should be wary of, and if so, what are the symptoms. Moreover, I'm reluctant to take long trips with it until I've determined the problem. Interestingly enough, I didn't notice it really until I took off my Pilot Sports, eliminating their deafening rumble...

That said, does anyone know the ratio for the z3 2.8 diff?

If you can't hear the noise over normal tire noise, then it's most likely not something you need to worry about. All differentials make at least a little noise - there is no such thing as a silent differential.
