I know on my 2001 Z3, the gas cap door will not open if the car is locked. So, go out to the car with her and open the passenger door & then open the gas cap.
Do you have the BMW locking cap? IF so you must insert the key turn it to the right, then hold it there while you unscrew the cap. It is difficult if you have more than one key on the ring.
