Z3 Side Air Bag Issue

So I'm driving home from work yesterday, probably going about 45-50 when I hear a loud bang much like a shotgun. Immediately I notice that my side is on fire and realize that the driver's side air bag just went off. Mind you I didn't even so much as touch a vehicle, or hit a pothole or anything...

The people at the dealership seemed genuinely concerned, and my service writer told me that it was nearly impossible what happened to have actually occurred. I assured him it did, in fact, take place. By the time I got to the dealership (approximately 3 hours after my initial call) they already had a field engineer on the way.

Don't know what will come of this, but was curious if this has happened to anyone else out there...

BMW must be the bavarian acronym for "anything's possible." my car was setting off the rollover inertia switch for no reason umpteen million times. the dealer worked on it more than several times, finally moved the switch far enough away from the blown speaker that they refused to replace so that it stopped happening. i wonder if the sensor is in the panel with your speaker?
