Ok, Started by cleaning the threads in head for new spark plugs. Picked some basic B. Platinums and used some anti sieze and put them in. (yes they are gapped).

started car and it ran rough at first and has black smoke coming out. Drove around and tried to gun it and it would surge and blow black smoke up to third gear and then kinda catch and run smooth. I noticed black smoke when missing on heavy throttle and at idle.

Started to drive the 2 miles toward home and when warmed up I noticed it was running smoother. I had that little surge of power now and then like when it was running good a week ago. A surge of power not a sputter or miss.

I did not see smoke anyore. So next to see how much smoke at idle like a few minutes ago.

I stopped and noticed zero smoke or smell of unburnt gas coming from exhaust. I got out of car and let idle for 20 minutes. Here is what I noticed.

1. No smoke 99% of the time. Even when I would hop back in and give it throttle.

2. The motor was at a smooth idle at 800rpms. However every 20 seconds or so I would hear a CLICK and idle would just momentarily jump up about 50 rpms. Still no smoke or smell.

3. One time I know I heard a different CLICK and motor sputtered for just a coupld seconds and black smoke started to come out. That was just once in 20 minutes.

4. Got back in car and gunned it as I drove off and NO black smoke!
Drove home and parked and still no black smoke or sputter.

Before you say like I thought that it was because car warmed up.

I ate dinner and an hour later got back in car and started it and it ran rough again an lots of black smoke. Drove till warm and it still smoked and sputtered. I also noticed it did not click and change RPMs at idle like earlier when it was not smoking.

I stepped on it and it seemed to stop sputtering and I think smoked stopped but it was dark out.

So what do you think. Could not be cam or valves as it would be consistant smoke and sputter?

Oh and I pushed the end of the spark plug wire that had just some middle wires exposed back into the boot as far as it would go and it seemed to spark fine when I put in on a plug to test. Nice jolt I got getting my finger too close to the plug I was testing. YIKES!

What should I try next?\

Airflow box?
Temp sensor?

ARGG!

I ordered Bently tonight.

I dont have trouble code device.

THanks
Tod

Did you have any issues like this before changing the plugs?

Black smoke means running rich, or incomplete combustion. I have read a number of other threads saying that earlier BMWs (up thru early to mid E36s) do not run well on Platinum plugs. You might want to change back to a plain old Bosch or NGK copper plug.

I too have heard this and suspect this to be the problem. They are fouling and this is the information that I was given. Your car should use a Bosch WR-9-LS.

Kirby, I have heard the same thing. That many/most BMW's do not run to well on the Platinum plugs.....

You really need to have your car plugged into a code reader. This will help in taking the guess work out of this for you and everyone. You could have a number of sensors that are fouled up. A garage will do this for $70 or so. Saves you time and money (changing parts that don't need to be changed.) Do this before you completely foul up your catalytic.

You mean go to the BMW dealer and ask them to run diagnostics on the car?
