I have been running on an empty power steering pump for a few months now and have finally decided to hunt down the source of the leak... It wasn't hard to find, the fluid poured out as fast as I could put it in... Its coming from the pump seal behind the pulley, and its leaking like a screen door. P/S pumps are costly (I don't need to tell any of you that) but I wonder if I buy the gasket/seal kit to rebuild the pump for $35 do you think the gears would still be any good?? The guy at the BMW shop said that the P/S pumps are extremely tuff and durable. So I guess my question is, am I wasting my time considering the rebuild kit, and should just go and get a reman pump for $300 some odd dollars?? And I so what is a reliable pump to buy?

If your car isn't a daily driver, and you could pull it off the road for a little while id def consider the seal kit. Remove the pump, inspect gears and housing to find if you do need a new pump.
If the pump is ok go out and buy the seal kit, if not buy a new (second hand) pump.
Peace, let us know what happens.

I can take it off the road for a while and I will let you know how the gears look when I get it apart, I will probably take pictures and post them so you guys can have a look at them also and give an opinion of where I should go next... I am very savvy at rebuilding things and worked in an auto body shop for 5 years so I know what to look for but a second opinion is always good... If it is repairable I will rebuild it and then let you guys know how hard or easy it was to do and how it worked out for me... Worst case scenario, I break a broken P/S pump, booo hooo...[driving2]

Sounds fantastic!
As i am a mechanic I am very interested to see what the inside of these pumps look like, looking from the outside of the casing it looks like it could be a vane pump? of is it a gear pump?[scratch]
Not quite sure but I'm excited!

My gasket kit isn't going to fir this Vickers P/S pump, Here are some pics of the guts of mine... thinking about getting a used pump on ebay for now.. It wasnt hard to get it out so replacing it again later would be a snap... Here are the pics.. You can see that the gear teeth look good and everything seems to be in good working order... I just cannot find the gasket replacement kit anywhere..
