I just recently purchased and was given two BMWs a 1985 325e and a 1987 325e both car are running and i paid 300 for both. I considering keeping the 87 and scrapping the 84. these are my first trip down the road of BMW what should I look for, replace, etc. first.

holy crap! does that guy have any more he's trying to get rid of?!?

what's the mileage?

if it's past 175,000 it's most likely due for a clutch replacement. the timing belt is the next thing that comes to mind.

other than that, they're tough cars, so I'm unaware of any particular 'trouble areas', besides your standard used car stuff i.e. spark plugs, wires, oil+filter, brake wear and overall visual inspection for leaks.

I'd probably keep one, and fix the other up nice and pretty and sell it.

Pick the car that has the least rust (if any) aswell.
Rust can be the ultimate pita down the track.
Yeah, like chicken said, replace all your filters and def. do the timing belt and water pump if your unsure when it was last done as these motors are contact engines (valves will hit tops of pistons if the belt breaks), only replace your clutch if its slipping though.
Peace and welcome to BmwBoard!
