Subjectively, I don't think you can feel the difference between the two engines. When looking for my Z3 coupe, I test drove both the 2.8 and 3.0. I honestly couldn't feel the difference in power between the two, and if anything, really enjoyed the 'torqueness' of the 2.8 over the 3.0. Of course, I might just be trying in vain to justify my choice. Price, of course, put me over the edge in the end- the '00 2.8 cost me nearly $3,000 less than the 3.0, and had 15K fewer miles despite being 1 year older. $3,000 for 25 bhp? No way.
So if all else is equal (mileage, condition etc), I'd go for the 2.8 and throw on a Dinan cold-air intake and maybe some performance software. You'll save money in the process and gain some custom/tuner cache....
Or get Ford Conversion Van with some lounge chairs and a chimney. It would be like highschool again. Wicked...
