you're lucky...but i'm betting you're not 18 =) right now my insurance is about 1700 per year WITH ONLY LIABILITY. for those of you who don't know what that means (for one thing, shouldn't be driving), it means that if i get into an accident and my car gets screwed, and its concluded that it's my fault - no money comes to me. i pay for the other guy's car, my car stays looking like hell and my insurance rates go up. almost 2 grand a year just to fulfill the lawful requirements...what a load. the only criteria for me to get this M5 would be to gross about 60k. wish me luck

I am 27. 25 is a crucial cut-off for insurance purposes. I also gross over $60k/year, which is why I can afford to drive what I drive. I also have a record that is now clean for insurance purposes (no tickets in past 3 yrs.)

Still, there are many things you can do to lower your insurance.

It sounds like you had some problems in the past. Some of those old tickets (if they are tickets and not accidents) could potentially be re-opened and changed to something with less points or possibly a non-moving violation.

If you rent, you should combine your renter's insurance with your car insurance. Even if you don't have renter's insurance, it may be cheaper to get some if it results in a low enough car premium.

Other than that, location is very important. When I moved to downtown Milwaukee after law school and bought my bimmer, I was paying $350/month. (Indeed, for a three-month period I was paying $450/month due to the retroactive increase and lower premium payments) Moving to the burbs cut that amount in half with no other relevant changes.

Don't be afraid to shop around for insurance. You may also consider having the car titled or registered under your parents' names, but that has some potential drawbacks and may not be a 'legitimate' course of action.

yup

thats the crappy part. my car is under my dad's name. and i'm of course the primary driver because my dad is too moral to commit fraud. i live at home, and will do so for a couple more years, as that increases my net capabilities. there's no point in shopping around really because my parents will stay with our current crappy provider, and if i go anywhere else i'll end up paying more by not being under their name. as far as tickets go, i have one differed, two dismissed, godbless lawyers =) how they can get me out of a "speeding(25 over) not signaling, and runing a redlight" charge, i dont know, but i don't much care either. my 75k goal is only a goal, and goals are only there to make you reach harder. if i make it, i'm set and i can buy two M5s. haha...wish me luck in my new field everybody - no more truck driving and whiney people for me![wave]
