Man, that's terrible. It's stuff like that that makes me think when I go too fast in the cabrio... "I don't have a roof or airbags. If I crash, I die". He's damn lucky.

So much for the kids in the backseat if that guy/girl had any. I don't think they would have made it, look at how the head rests and the back seat bent, talk about the major brain/head or spinal injury they'd have recieved. The 5 series is a strong car, but I wouldn't call it a tank. The 7 series and X5, now those are the tanks...

I still believe the front seat is the safest place in the car, it has the side airbags and bar in its favor in a side crash, the roof is highest in a rollover, you have the front end to protect you which is designed to be crashed, and its furthest from the rear in the event of a rear impact, even though this one was atypical since the bumper was unscathed and could not absorb the impact. No backseat riding for me...

Impressive and sad to see the results, but on the upside,... you walked from the wreck, but even by BMW standards, you can consider yourself lucky.

The best way to cure the blues- runto a dealership and get you a new machine...

Hey guys, MAJOR karma was at play here.

If I said you would be in an accident on your way home today, how many of you would think that your car would become airborn, nose-up, land on its ass, and ten get hit by damn mini-van while your ride is upside down? ... the answer would probably be 0 (with no rounding error).

Thus far, the e39 is definitely an M1A1 main battle tank.
I'd be interested if you can produce a similar "success story" for the 7-Series and/or X5. I'm sure they exist!

I know I've posted this pic like a million times on our Board, but Darren wanted to know any 7/X5 stories.

Here's a pic of our 2004 X5 4.4i, that was t-boned by a Nissan pickup truck, travelling between 50-55mph. At least 5 airbags deployed, and the EMT said the X5 saved my life. We were planning on driving the Z8 Alpina, or the 330cic that morning. THANK GOD we took the X5, or I would not be typing this success story
today! Besides from some hearing loss (due to so many airbags deploying on my head, and some dislocated vertabrae....I walked away).

Dude, was anyone in the passenger side? I do not see the seat?
I WAS!! It was horrible. The whole frame of the car took the force of the accident, and the seat was still basically attached to the frame, but it buckled really badly. I had to climb our the driver side. The seat was too damaged to be salvaged (but the driver's seat was perfect). They had to cut the doors off, since they were mangled so severly. It was a nasty accident. Without sounding so cliche, and "Hollywood", I still have nightmares of the truck coming at me, and the sound of the twisting metal, and all the airbags. Ghastly!

That X5 looks very repairable, all it needs is the frame straightened, the airbags replaced, whatever components don't function repaired, and some new doors. I bet it's back on the road with a rebuilt title... As for the e39, if it had only been hit head on, it could also be back on the road, but not with the rear frame smashed as well as all 6 sides damaged. I guess we can say BMW builds very safe cars, regardless of the model. Although I would not wanna get t-boned or flipped on the roof in a Z4 roadster...

You're joking right? [?|] The entire frame was bent!! Yes, you can replace the airbags, repair the seats, replace the glass, etc... If there was ever another accident of this caliber, the structural integrity would not protect the occupants. Our insurance, AAA, took one look at this car, and sent it to the scrap yard at once. No rebuilt title, no salvage title...It's been smushed! They said the frame was damaged beyond repair, and occupant safety would be at risk with another accident!

"was coming home tonight on 183 going west. some asshole cuts me off, i hit a median, car goes airborn nose first, lands on its rear end, then flips and ends up on its roof and slides another 50-75 yards while some minivan hits me during the sliding. i kicked out my window and walked out with only a scratch on my foot and knuckle along with a bump on my head from me releasing the seatbelt while upside down. all i can say is i dont think i would have made it if it was some other car..."

=O, German cars in general are quite safe. But this story is insane.

i specifically remember you posting about begging the insurance company and rather "pushing" for them to total it and finally they acquiesced. I guess you should dig that post up and edit it, don't worry I wont send a PM and ask you to edit it this time as it doesn't involve the usual... [;)]

I would still have that car fixed and put back on the road, the damage in that photo looks rather minor. It seems as if the doors were removed and the seat removed and the headlight removed to add dramatic detail.

I have no idea about the Z4's but would assume they are just as safe as anyother BMW. I do know that the Z3's hold up quite well in a serious accident:

Yikes, I remember those pics, I also remember you saying she walked away from it, thank God. I think the Z4 would probably hold up the same as the Z3 would in a rear end or head on collision. I just worry about a side impact, with the low-down car and the small door/tight cabin combination. I sat in a Z4 M and I was forced to lean my arm on the door and my knees were too close to the dashboard. I would not wanna be in a crash in a roadster...

Funny thing is I went to my dealer just to look at the cars and I sat in the Z4M, even offered to buy it for roughly 4k off sticker in the fall of 06. The window sticker even looked worn and the car had 60 something miles on it, but the salesman laughed, he was more concerned with leasing me an X3 for $600 a month. Sure enough, a month later he calls (being a no pressure salesman as he said) and asks if I was still interested in the car, and it wasnt about the X3. A Z4M convert in december, just what I don't need... A 4k discount for a Z with an S54 is tempting however. [:D]

Yes, we did beg AAA, because they sent some rookie inspector to inspect the car as it sat at BMW body shop after the accident. They came back with some ridiculous amount it was going to cost them to fix (don't remember if it was $25k, 35k....). We were very upset, as the body shop said the frame was really damaged. There was no way we were going to accept the frame and all the damage to be fixed. Besides from not being safe, they car basically had no value...especially if it was give a salvage title. AAA sent out a "supervisor", and he took one look at the car, and said "No way can this be fixed" or something like that.

I guess things never change, you're just out to nail every detail. Why are you always suck a dick? I've never done anything to you, for you to always be on the attack!
