That X5 looks very repairable, all it needs is the frame straightened, the airbags replaced, whatever components don't function repaired, and some new doors. I bet it's back on the road with a rebuilt title... As for the e39, if it had only been hit head on, it could also be back on the road, but not with the rear frame smashed as well as all 6 sides damaged. I guess we can say BMW builds very safe cars, regardless of the model. Although I would not wanna get t-boned or flipped on the roof in a Z4 roadster...

7803 ?- Based upon your comments, it doesn't appear that you're a mechanical or civil engineer. structural integrity issues and physics are the only thing that really matter in a violent crash.

please help me (and us) understand the basis and logic of your perspective that there's nothing to really worry about here.

Please explain your post, I am lost as to what it is you're asking. I said from the picture of that X5 it looks repairable, and everyone knows that body shops cut corners to make the car look cosmetically ok. If that car were in the right hands, it would be back on the road, not withstanding the Utopian perspective of all cars being perfect on the road. Also I dont understand the "us" you mean yourself reading deutschs comments? Two people is an awfully small number to use "us" in. Anyhow, I digress, and stand by my comments that the car is repairable to the naked eye, and that I would not want to be T-boned in a tiny little Z4 roadster. If your arm is pressed against the door when it takes a heavy impact, I guarantee you that arm wont be the same for a while, if ever. Just opinions here, it's a forum, and lastly I never said there was nothing to worry about here. Take it easy tiger...

This picture alone does not give a true look at the damage. I expect th frame to have been jammed inward at least 6 -12 inches. Even sent to a chop shop, it would take some crazy cuts and welding not only to put this back together, but also to make sure the integrity of the frame is no longer compromised. I have seen cars driving like crabs,... almost sideways.
Bottom line, I would not drive this car, fixed.
My 2 cents

lol... God, I love dry esoteric comments that are so subtle yet so undeniable pointed that one must simply bow to the true artisan. [rofl]

And to tag along to this thread; it's not only the safety in collisions, it's also in prevention. I have read and heard many people attest to the crisp-ness and excellence of the braking, handling, etc of these vehicles in accident avoidance manuevering.

Adam, wow... had a similar experience, except it wasn't watching a car, it was watching the car about to slam into a tree (right in the passenger side right where I was sitting)... and it was a Camry.... not a tankk.... lol....far from it. But we survived; somehow I think providence might play a role; at least were physics checks itself at the door. Still I'm not terribly comfortable sitting up front passenger in any car. I'm all right driving or in the back, but I get a little freaked sitting in the passenger seat.
