Hi - newbie here!

Just replaced rear brake pads and sensor - but the warning light still comes on. [confused]

Any idea why? E.g. do I have to get the reset tool?

Pardon? The warning light that looks like it's warning that yer brake pads need changing. I've changed the brake pads and the sensor, but the light's still on. Weird. MOT soon - the brakes are superb but I reckon they'll fail it cos of the warning light.

perhaps a glitch?

Could be!

I just wonder whether perhaps one's supposed to reset the electronics to get the warning light off?

yea take it to the local BMW shop and they should be able to reset it for you...that is if it really is a glitch and not an actual problem! [:D]

Every warning light need to be reset after you do the required work on your car, except low brake fluid or the washer there are some steps to do it. You may find explanetions of resettings in many BMW sites. Try my 330i.com

Okay first of all stop talking about a car you have NO clue about. There IS NOTHING TO RESET. Don't waste your money taking it to the dealer. Most likely the pad wear sensor just isn't plugged in correctly. If you forget to plug it in (or it's not installed correctly) it will throw the brake pad warning. But there is nothing to reset.

His 1991 5 series has 4 things in common with a 2002+ 3 series....and thats the fact it has wheels, brakes, a steering wheel, and windows.

First of all, I will not stop talking about it.

Second, if you had learned how to read properly you would've been able to read my full statement.

Thank you, have a nice day.

"4 things in common with a 2002+ 3 series....and thats the fact it has wheels, brakes, a steering wheel, and windows."

Practically identical then? [:o)]

I'll check the sensor again. There's only one way it can fit on the pad, and the connector is self explanatory, so I can't understand why the light won't go out.

The "reset" idea was just clutching at straws. I'll probably get a reset tool just to shut those annoying messages up on the dash, but it's useful to know that's not the reason for the brake warning light not going out. I might need to clean out the connector.

Thanks for the help.

I had this problem. Changed pads and sensor cables but still the light was on.
You need to reset the dash clocks to remove it from the memory.
I did not believe it at first but it does work.
Turn the ignition to on (Do not start) and leave it on for 45 seconds.
This will reset the brake warning light.
Worked for me!

deedee47 - spot-on! [clap]

...but sadly not problem solved [confused] . There must be something wrong with one of the sensors cos after I did your trick and the warning light went off, I went for a spin round the block and it came back on after a couple of minutes. Must be the sensors cos the front pads are very healthy indeed, and the rears, as mentioned above, are new. Damn.

Thanks for the help.

It's not the computer that needs resetting.
I spoke with BMW about the brake light and it was them that advised how to reset it by leaving the ignition in position 2.

Have you checked all the sensor cables? the ends of the cable where they slot into the brake pads... Do they still have the little nodule sticking out or are they broken off?
There should be a little lump sticking up in the middle od the plastic plug that slots into the brake pads. If this is missing then the cable must be replaced.

Good luck dude...

"Have you checked all the sensor cables?"

No I haven't, but I will. I have a suspicion it might be the front one. The rear's new cos I replaced it along with the pads, but I'll check the connector all the same. In either case the pads are new or nearly new.

Thanks for all the replies - one way or another they all turned out to be right!

Here's a good laugh - I just took the front wheel off to check the brake pad sensor... there isn't one! There was a piece of blu-tack stuck in the connector, with a bit of wire crammed in it. I haven't a clue why it's been working since I bought it, and only chosen to trigger the warning light now. I'll get another sensor tomorrow and see how it goes.

Weird!
