Let's say that you own a magazine sponsored by Ford. Ford asks you to test drive their "new" POS car, whatever you wanna call it. You test-drive this car and you find that it has the shittiest handling, quality, mileage, innovation, ergonomics, everything about it is horrible. Now when you go to write your report about your huge sponsor, what are you gonna say? You can't say that it's the piece of dog-shit that it is because well... we all know what happens.

Also you have to think about what kind of car it is. If you have a Toyota or something that has three moving parts, of course it'll be extremely reliable there’s nothing in it to break in the first place. When you look at Mercedes (speaking of which, I've heard that over the past few years their cars have been having many problems, and BMW still rules), it's packed with technology. It isn't that easy to make a car that is packed with the most advanced technology super-reliable unless you're willing to spend a fortune.

Oh and one more thing, USA Today sucks.

You gotta read between the lines. Generally, a not glowing opinion about some aspect of a car means it sucks. And I don't think Toyota is the best example. In the December Car and Driver, they compared the $70,000 cars. The Lexus apparently has gadgets galore and they all work and they work well. Mercedes can't even figure out how to get basic A/C functions down (which I can personally attest to) let alone their other gadgets. BMW's I-Drive was so bad, it got ranked pretty low on the list. And this is from a mag that just loves BMWs.

I wonder if it ever occured to them to take certain makes and models, and do a real survey, with info from MECHANICS around the country (that are not under employment of the automobile manufacturers) and have them keep tabs on how many of what type of cars have been in the shop, and for what reasons. As for the ones that do work for a manufacturer, find out how many warranty jobs have been done. Take this TRUE data, and comprise a list of the ACTUAL problems that are occuring. I also noticed that the Dodge Neon is not on there anywhere. This is very suprising considering the fact that I have never, and I mean NEVER, seen a Neon that wasn't in the shop at three times a year. Odd considering my friend Toni, my ex-girlfriend Kelly, her friend Michelle, my mother, cousin Becky, and my friend Danielle, all owned them and all had to have the head gaskets replaced. [confused] My ex-girlfriends was in the shop not three, not four, not five, but EIGHT times last year alone!!!!! I told her to buy a new car, but she always says "it doesn't matter, it's still under warranty". True, but how much of a pain in the @ss is it to take it in damn near every month¿

P.S. If you can't notice the pattern in the owners of the Neon, you are probably blind.

codex, is the new E really that bad? My dad has an 01 E430 4Matic and the interior doesn't seem to be lacking anywhere....really feels like a nice, full Benz. My mom drives a 2001 S500 and that is really nice on the inside as well. The technology of the interior has a lot to it, but it is all very easy to operate and feels natural. And as I said earlier in this thread, my college roommate has a C240 4Matic and the interior feels really nice as well. I think Mercedes constistently does a good job with their cars, inside and out, just like BMW. My parents like the S-Class so much, we have two S500 4Matic's on the way (to replace the 01 E430 4Matic and the 01 S500).
