Just ask what you should get for under $30K, then. No one needs to know who's paying for it or how. Frankly, that doesn't matter to us. Some of the less fortunate individuals on this board find it quite disturbing that someone is going to get something for free that they had to work anywhere from 5 to 7 years to pay for....and they probably waited more than half of their lives.

....think of something you really had to work for. Something that took you years to obtain. Something that took a lot of stress and sweat. Now imagine someone else getting it hassle free. Wouldn't that burn your ass?

Wasn't that an inheritance? Or am I thinking of someone else?

In any event, the ML is glorified minivan in my opinion, with very poor quality control (at least on the early models, it may have improved). Get a G-wagen if it has to be an MB. Shouldn't be much more than the ML.

As for the drugs, I suppose you can con your parents a little longer and get a new car out of the deal. Not very honorable, but I can understand the desire to get all you can. I would suggest trying to keep a low profile. [;)]

Number one, You better hope that they buy you a car because contrary to popular belief, there is a ninety percent chance that you won't make that much as a chef. I've been there, I know. Number two, no I wouldn't turn down a new car, but that doesn't matter because the chance of either one of my parents buying me one is a snowballs chance in hell. Number three, I graduated number three in my class, in a field that is much more demanding than culinary arts, and I got a foot in the ass, and sent out the door to get a job!!! I grew up in a town full of little kids that were driving around Porsches, BMW's, and Merc's. Knowing that they never worked a single day to pay for it killed me while I was driving around my 1979 LeBaron. I will always have the satisfaction of knowing that my father, my kids (if I ever have any), and I, all know what work is, and that is why I will probably appreciate my little 318, more than he could ever imagine.

P.S. If the insurance is too high for a 740, I wouldn't advise even looking at the M3. Try borrowing a couple grand from mummy and daddy (borrowing means paying back[;)] ), and getting a decent car that will get you from point A to point B until you can afford to buy one on your own. IMHO [thumb]

Good advice, but I doubt he will listen. If a new car won't do it, I don't know what will. I try to frame my advice to the listener, which is why I kept it to things that he may actually do.

Sort of like someone who gets a possession charge and wants probation. If you are going to change your lifestyle, great; probation is for you. But if you are just going to keep doing what you are doing, you might as well sit a few days and be done with it. That way, you don't sit a lot longer when you screw it up down the road.

You have to be honest about your limitations. It doesn't sound like he wants to change his lifestyle. Until he wants to change, its not going to happen.

I just know that I can look back on my life (mostly through pictures because my memory is sort of lacking from those days), and realize what a waste of money it was. I can't honestly say that it was a waste of time, because those were some of the most entertaining days of my life. I just think that if somebody does drugs, if they take about two weeks sober and look at what they are doing, they just might realize what a shame it is.

And that's quite alright. I had the same dream one time. Spent two years taking culinary arts at a local college when still in high school, even did a six month internship at the CIA. I cooked at four different high class restaraunts before I figured out that it didn't pay enough, considering the ammount of work that has to be done. There is a common misbelief that all they do is go in and cook. Everybody fails to realize that to make decent money in the culinary industry, management is a must. Management consists of menu makeup, stocking, prepping, ordering, labor scheduling, labor coordination, plus keeping those nasty ass health inspectors at bay. Maybe if you get lucky you get to cook once in a while.

They probably pay less in the south because the cost of living is lower. It's like that everywhere.
If I had the exact same job I have now in NYC, I'd probably make a ton more money reason being it costs more to live there.

The secret is to get a job (i.e. programming) that you can do from home. You then get a job in an expensive area that pays a lot for the high cost of living in that area....except you live somewhere with a low cost of living because you dial in for work everyday. You could live ANYWHERE.

A LeBaron?! [xx(]

As long as you spend time with your children instead of working all the time then trying to buy their love for time NOT spent with them, you'll have a wonderful family. [thumb]
