I reckon Diesel smells good (i'm actually not joking) and it's no more difficult to have it spilling all over your car than petrol... A lot of the diesel opposition seems quite fickle to me.
North Americans are very weary about buying diesel. Here there is a common misconception that diesel cars offer poor reliability, below average performance, pollution the air, difficult fuel access, and carry a higher cost of maintenance.

Both VW and Mercedes are doing an excellent job offering good performing models, but it will be a while before the market truly accepts diesel powered cars.

thx guys for advise...

no diesel in US and US ppl dont like diesel right?

yes i am in california.. so better do the 545...

kscarrol, is that right you get 30 mpg for the long trips? if I go from SF to LA then it will be around 30 mpg? wow!! that's a good V8 engine!! i never heard a V8 can make 30mpg (usually 20-25 right?)... and the city is around 20? you sure? that's a 530 gas mileage...

545 is my choice then
pure city is around 17. My typical driving is around 20 with some highway but mostly city. Pure interstate, between New Orleans and Houston (my typical long road trip), yes I get near 30 mpg. Not bad for the V8 power I get in trade. Diesel can be difficult to find here in the US. After some weak efforts at diesel cars early on, diesel has an uphill battle here in the US I'm afraid.

Diesel I say!.. (And I don't mean the jeans!)

Cheers all!

True about how N.Am's (U.S.A. mostly) have this "thing" about diesel cars.
Which I find odd since the trendy hybrids being sold are ONLY environmentally "correct" when being driven UNDER 30mph. Not to mention what the hell are these people going to do with a non-biodegradable battery????

Side note:
Ugh! And now CA passed a law allowing hybrids to use HOV lanes!?!?!?!? Huh?
So at 65mph a hybrid using PETROL getting only (at that speed) about 32mpg and emitting emissions (at that speed) can use HOV lane but my diesel getting 45+mpg can't?????? God Bless America! [screwy]

AnyWHO.... I own two 2002 VW diesels (see link for pix) - Gutless as all hell but a cool 45+mpg I get commuting to/from work each day. I have 89,3332mi on one and not a single issue! None! Nada! Nothing! Simple engine, fewer parts, built for high-mileage... I say if BMW ever makes the "d" engine available in the U.S., I'd buy it!

btw... which one does most ppl buy for E60? 545 or 530? if there is less 545 buyer that means less ppl demand it and therefore it will have bigger depreciation compared to 530 right?

advise advise

remember money is not my objection, gas mileage V8 has no big difference compared to 530, but again... just prefer buying with a WISE decision
