He's never actually going to do it...
we don´t know...let´s see.

and yes, it is possible. do already have your hands on an e30 and additionally on a e36 M3 engine? i think it is easier to find an e36 M3 for less money than swapping an engine you have to buy inot a car you also have to buy.

It just shows his lack of understanding of what it takes to build a car and the fact that he has done no research on the topic. The fact that he's even asking such questions shows that he doesn't really know what such a swap would involve and even how to approach it. That's not a bad thing, but he's been told several times that yes, things can fit, but there is always going to be some sort of custom fabrication of something involved.

Any engine can fit into an E30 or any other car - it's just a matter of what you want to do with the car and how much work (and money) you want to put into it. You could put a Ford Powerstroke Diesel V8 in an E30 if you wanted to, just like you could put an E36 M3 engine in an E30. Would the fabrication involved be different - yes, drastically. However, it's theoretically possible to fit a Powerstroke or any other engine in an E30 or any other car for that matter.

So, with that being said, how about no more questions about whether or not it is possible to fit x engine into y car? If you have thoughtful questions that pertain to a particular swap, then by all means, ask away. But simply asking such generic basic questions isn't going to get you any help.

Sure, you can do it. Heck, you can stuff a V12 from a 7er in an E30 ----- but neither job going to be "Plug and Play". I agree with Justin, just asking this question shows that you don't have the knowledge/skills to accomplish a job like this. That's not a flame, engine swaps are usually complicated.

Short of rebuilding an M20, I knew the e30 in and out, and I always did my own work to the car.

I thought hard about an S52 swap... but in the end decided it's just too much work.

hmmm.... since jrt67ss350 says anythings theoretically possible i think ill go ahead and put an enzo engine into a 1967 mini cooper.

anyways all the soopid comments out of the way!

thanks for all the usefull advice epj3, big daddy, and wadula
and to answer nadrojs question: i simply am trying to figure out what possiblities there are because my dad and i are looking for a car to fix up to race, and i find cars but he says no not that one, too far away, or too expensive. but i found another car e30 m3 with no engine so i was wondering if it were possible to put an e36 m3 engine into it. thx

It'll cost you about 4k for the engine, transmission, driveshaft, and dif. Then it'll take you quite a while to fab up the rest (exhaust, intake, shift linkage, etc.) But everyone who has done this swap is VERY happy with it. I can't imagine my engine in a car that weighs 300 or maybe even 400 lbs less.

it should be pretty sweet i found a site that distributes the euro tuned engines to people so i was going to get one of those and buy the rest on ebay or roadfly or something.

how much do think it would cost for a professional motorsports place to pop that stuff in for me? because just me and my dad would probably take two years or so.

and directed to BIG DADDY since you live in Seattle do you know of such a place?thx

If you provide the engine:

$10K - $15K for labor
$2K - $3K for misc parts (radiator, hoses, linkage, exhaust, etc.)

I believe East Side Bavarian, Car Tenders or Strictly BMW, all independent shops could do the work, I am not sure if they take those types of jobs though I believe they could or at least point you in the right direction.

I know of several such swaps into the E30 platform. All in they run $15k or more.

I don't recommend it. It usually makes the E30 nose-heavy and ruins its handling, even when a full E36 M3 suspension is also swapped. You would be better off building up an M20 or an S14 to make similar power than adding an M50/S50.

www.bmpd.com used to sell (and may still sell) a CD on how to do this very swap, for several hundred dollars.
