With regard to just the 3 series cars, the E30, E36, and E46 all have their plusses and minuses. I have my second E30 and my son a 2003 E46 330ci. The biggest plus for the E30 is it is easier to work on than the newer models. It is a source of good reliable transportation and fun both on and off the track. It does not however have the power of the new E46s nor the "comfort" items. The E36 has its share of problems especially when a lot of track time is seen. Our driving events coordinator has told us the rear trailing arm bushings are prone to wear out quickly. The rear sway bar mounting points on the rear subframe are considered to be rather weak. The plastic radiator necks crack and break off and the original plastic impeller on the water pump disintegrates in normal use. In addition the front subframe where the motor mounts attach is prone to cracking as is the rear floorpan. Granted some of these items occur primarily with track use others do not especially the delaminating front and rear interior panels on the early E36s. Like the E30s the rear shock mounts still need improving and use of the E46 rear mounts is an upgrade for both. The E46 has a problem with the clips that hold the inner sun roof panel in place. The plastic clips break and you have a panel in your lap. Overall the E46 has slipped in the reliability ratings at Consumers. Whether we agree with the mag or not it is an indicator from the current owners. The more extensive use of electronics is likely the primary culprit.
