I haven't seen anything about this here. If it is a re-post, I apologize.

Long story short, an E46 M3 lost control at 100mph on a Canyon run in California over the weekend, flipped over, burst into flames, and the back seat passenger got trapped and died.

It is a very long thread, but I think it merits our attention. We all do stupid things on the road sometimes. Maybe this will give each of us pause before we risk our lives and the lives of others. If anything, perhaps we can all learn from this tragedy and prevent it from happening to someone else.

Finally, I offer my sincere condolences to the friends and family of the deceased. Nobody deserves that.

You can find more info. and a lot of opinions (229 posts at last count) on it here, and other places.

Take it to the track if you want to race.

No question, there will be some jail time for the driver. Good point you bring up about the track, Some people just don't get it though. There are far too many varibles for ANY car out on the open road.

Tragic story.

BTW there was a post on there that said if you are driving at speed then put your windows all the way down.

I've spent time driver-training with the Porsche club here locally on a race-track, and its compulsory to have your windows all the way up.

Is this because the windows also lend structural support to the car like the windscreen does?

I have another story I just heard about. This kid who lives in Saddle River, NJ (about 30-40 minutes from where I live, I have a few friends there) died in a car accident this week. He is 18 years old, I went to middle school with him (he was a grade below me). He drives an H2 (worst vehicle ever) but it was in the shop so he was using his mom's CL500 and he was with this 17-year-old girl. They were going like 90-95mph on the West Side Highway when he hit the curb and the car went buck wild and flipped over and crashed and burned. The driver was only 18 years and the girl was only 17.
Rule #1 people: If you're gonna speed, do it by yourself!! As a driver, you are responsible for your passengers and you do NOT have the right to drive wrecklessly with others as their lives are in your hands !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guys its all bad the M3 story sucked i know what its like when your racing like that. but that god damn woman in her CIVIC. That makes me more angry than the story itself. If i was there she would have been hunted down and shown what it feels like to be thrown upside down, accidently kill someone, loose your car then get thrown in jail. its typical of the OLDER generation of drivers who don't understand. yes he was stupid but i bet she wouldn't have said the same thing if her daughter went out looking like a hooker then got raped.

Sorry if i sound pissed off but i am. those sort of people are the ONLY cause of road rage. inconsiderate assholes who can't deal with the fact you have a nicer car. so they cut you up or don't let you in, or filp you the bird. The world would be a safer better place if everyone who shouts such an inconciderate and pointlessly uneducated comment like that were shot.

Interesting about the windows. I have been to several DE events with the BMW CCA. It is compulsory to have your windows down. If you crash the car or flip over, the corner workers need to be able to extract you quickly. The windows may not work after you crash the car.

AFAIK, there is no structural support issue with the windows, but ICBW.

i only go fast when i feel safe on the road and there isnt many other cars on the road i also make sure i know a road befor i speed on it.

The mercedes did its best to save them...
Maybe it was the 50 billion airbags in the car that killed them.

Regarding the windows issue, the way I understand it is that you should have your windows down for safety in case you get into an accident, there is easy access inside/outside of the car. But when you have your windows up, it improves performance and gas mileage. In the Owners' Manual of my G35C, they say that when driving on the highway, you should have your windows up as the roof of the car then just acts like a parachute and affects your gas mileage.
I believe on the new Mercedes models, they have like active accident aid, where if the car senses it is going to roll over, it closes the sunroof (if it is open) and opens one or all of the windows.
BMW has similar features...when you get into an accident, it automatically turns on the double-flashers, the interior lights turn on, and all the doors unlock.
