m5 as daily driver?

ok, i really like the looks of the e39 m5, but have come to the realization that i won't be able to afford it for a few more years. i can however afford (i think) the e39 540i. the thing is i REALLY want an m5. i love the looks and specs of the e34 m5 (91-93) and it's well within my projected price range. it really seems that i'm being told not to opt for an m5 for the city driving i will be doing. i'm headed into real estate, so driving people around for short distances should be a fairly frequent occurance. why is city driving for an m5 or m3 or m6 or anything like that so looked-down upon? talk me out of buying an m5 if there is an actual problem. thanks

No there is no problem with using an M car as a daily driver. The problem you will expericence with an M5, 91-93 is that they are getting old and getting up there in mileage. They have six individual throttle bodies, and are a true handbuilt motor, therefore rebuilding one is quite expensive.

The current M's get poor city gas mileage and are viewed as pleasure cars, not as daily beaters....
that is a valid point, and i was under that impression of the newer cars, however i didn't take a 91-93 to be "current"

thanks for your imput, regardless

Same, point, and imput is spelled with an "n" after the "i" and between the "p", respectively.

Thank you.

one typo and there goes my credibility...if you look down by your right hand, i think you'll find that the "n" and "m" keys are..holy crap they're right next to each other!!![8] thanks for pointing out the fact that i don't edit my posts. FYI, if i were to point out everyone's typos, i would have to quit my day job. comprende amigo?

What's that supposed to mean? I HOPE you aren't making fun of e30's...

If it weren't for the success and quality of this car, then Your car would be a joke!

[thumb] Ok, Mr. e30 no need to up your post count with this silly "war". Besides that post was exclusively for Mr. e30, but since you "Mr. Senior" had to jump in to something an out-of-the-garage-real-estate-"agent" couldn't comprehend, and took offense to, then I can rightfully assume that it is indeed true that you guys are overtly pretentious. The only sad difference here is the age difference....

Btw, that's a nice car and an even nicer farm silo[rofl]

What's wrong with farms? How about this -- you stop eating ANYTHING that had any relationship to a farm. Have fun starving as I'm driving on my back roads that happen to be near farms [thumb]

You also did not explain your post, about the X7 and X10 -- what are you talking about? I honestly just posted that becuase it sounded like you were trying to put down e30 owners.

ohhh man..

first of all i never said i was an agent, i said i was in the field. @sshole. secondly, what do you mean "couldn't comprehend"? thirdly, the only sad thing about the age difference is that you're fighting with people 30 years younger than you, who actually DONT have anything better to do. get to work, you've got car payments.

I've got car payments too, but I'm still in highschool. Most people are surprised that a highschool student chose to buy a bmw with his own money rather than some rice burner. Why are you the complete opposite? I smell someone who bought the car for the 'image.'

Oh yea, what's the ratio of your LSD?

Oh that's right, you do not have one. [fake] (if you do not know what that is -- which you probably do NOT, look it up.)

you guys need to cool it. what you guys are doing belongs on like tribalwar.com or bimmerforums or something, at bmwboard we are usually a big happy family, e30 and e46's a like.

apologies to e30fre@k for the post hijack.

back to the real post. i thought of getting an e28 m5 once, people told me no, but do what you "WANT" to do, cause you can always sell the car.

thats just my 2 cents

To me this is an easy decision - life is short, buy the car you want; you will thank yourself every time you get into it. I am no mechanic but I would think once the car's warmed up it shouldn't be too harmful to stop and go. Just take the long way home (I live one mile from work but take the scenic 10- mile trip home, and even then I don't want to get out and go in the house).

Get an E34 M5. They're the best M5 of the lot and it has the last evolution of the classic M1 straight-six. It shouldn't be any trouble in the city so long as you don't ride the clutch in city traffic and keep your gearchanges smooth.

BTW, the E34 M5 is my favourite BMW of all time so I'm biased. I reckon it's a much more complete drivers car than the E39 M5. I want one so bad [bigcry]
