There may be/is some truth to that. GM used to tell you (maybe still do) not to run the vehicle at the same RPM for more than a few minutes during break-in. That is, keep varying the RPM, don't lock in cruise control at one speed for more than a few minutes, etc. This was in the manual.

The dealer told me that the concern was something they called "engine set". They claimed that until the engine "set in", a constant RPM could possibly LOOSEN some of the fasteners in the engine due to vibration.....[scratch]

The E90 manuel says:

Breaking in the engine and differentials:
Up to 1250 miles/ 2000 km: Attempt to vary both engine and vehichle speeds, but refrain from exceeding an engine speed of 4500 rpm or a driving speed of 100 mph or 160 km/h.
Always obey all official speedlimits. (what????)
Avoind full-throttle operations and use the transmission's kick-down mode.
Once you have driven 1250 miles/2000 km, the engine ans vehichle speeds can be gradually increased.

I followed all this befor I even thought about opening here up. I was also told from the dealer not to use cruise control during this time. My car has over 5000km on it now and I've had abosoluty "0" problems till now. Other than my lady begging to drive too, but dont matter I dont let her much. [headbang]

a car broken-in properly naturally runs better and deliver more power. for example, big inner city driving slows the engine down as it never gets the chance to warm up properly. and this proper temperature household cleans an engine. once you take the car on the autobahn for longer rides the engine cleans itself. valve close better and thus increase compression etc.

it is the same with the breaking-in. it helps the engine to "prepare for real life" it´s likr flexing muscles before you start a sprint. a new engine is not yet worn out at the right places. pistons fit in there, but they will always have to settle in the cylinders. and that´s what they do during breaking in. everything needs it´s time to come to a perfecr synchronized gameplay. give it the time, and you will get back a lot!
