I can't afford all those cars lol. I have collected this moneyt since I was about 5 years old and know have enough for these type of cars. I am going to test drive this monday and see how everything is.

I had a little concern about the CSL. I dont think that type of higher speed racing car is needed in california but If I was to get a CSL I would get carbon-fiber roof top and not a hardtop. [driving2]

Also is there such thing as a [driving2] Manual with Automatic or a Manual with SMG. I know there is a SMG w/ Automatic but I neverheard of those can you guys keep me updated.

Thanks alot for all your help guys Its really helping .

SMG is a Sequential Manual Gearbox. It operates on the same principle as a manual transmission, but the clutch is electronically operated. SMG has an automatic mode where the computer shifts gears for you, but it is still a manual with an electronically controlled clutch

SMG is quite different from an automatic transmission in terms of mechanical design and operation. Automatics that have paddle shifters are still automatics.

Take a look at the automotive section of www.howstuffworks.com

First off, the E46 M3 CSL isn't even being offered for sell by BMW in the USA (as far as I last knew).

Second, the E46 M3 CSL is ONLY sold with the carbon fiber roof. There are no other choices.

Third, I don't even know what you are talking about in regards to your SMG question. Either you purchase the car with SMG or you don't. The E46 M3 CSL ONLY comes with the SMG gearbox. It is not offered in a traditional 3-pedal 6 speed gearbox...

I have no idea what the "driver2" is. There are basically three different SMG gearbox's BMW produces.

SMG I, first came out in the E36 and is offered in the Z4, some 3 series, and others. The SMG II, which is offered in the E46 M3, and the latest SMG III (7-Speed), which will be offered in the new M5, M3, and others I am sure...

brahtw8 points out how the SMG works and there is no need to further his comments....

(be sure not to drop anything heavy into the trunk. it just might fall through [80?]

lol a little fiesty there buddy [boxface] didnt mean to get you mad. I dont know much about CSL but the other guy told me choose a hard top CSL but I knew they made only carbon fiber roof tops because I never seen it with a hardtop.

Also SMG III I dont understand.

Why dose someone need to pay over $100,000 for a M5, 7 speed, top speed 203. The problem here is that with the M5 you are not even going to go up to 6th gear anytime and also it has a speed limiter so you can not take it off. There is no point in this M5 you are talking about lol [nono]

but thanks the advice

Ill keep you guys posted

Hey thanks,

I have always leaned to the Manual because you have so much control over the car and its much much funner [driving2]. I dont see any power in a SMG.

Thanks alot [:D]

just so you know, having 7 gears doesn't mean the car has a taller final gear. you can look at the ratios from 4 speed auto w/ overdrive to the latest 7 speed gear boxes, and you'll find that there'll usually be only one over drive gear. (maybe the sixth is a hair over 1:1.

without getting into too much details, by having more gears, engineers can choose to have a gear that is best for city fuel economy, and another one close by for "city performance" it might tap closer to the power band. if you had lesser number of gears, you'd tap way into the power band if you downshifted.. (does that makes sense to you?) higher revs, more gas burnt etc..

having 7 or maybe even more gears, (altho i don't know how practical) is easier when controlled electronically. i have hard enough utilizing all 6 of mine. ^^;; usually around town, i only use the first 4 gears. 5th is prolly the most rarely used out of all my gears. used only when i'm going btw 50-60..

also in most cars, the last gear's not even used for top speed testing. (from what i read many o mag articles over the years.) they cite the fact that the last gear's too tall to pull the car upto top speed..

Is this going to be your 1st car? what are you driving right now? The car shows a person's personality though. You drive fast or you just want the car looks COOL?

Don't get me wrong I am not mad/upset about anything. I was just pointing out the facts and differences in the M3.

What location do you live in? Do you live in the USA or a different location? I am not sure where "Johnson" is. Are you talking about the 2005 M3 with the Competition Package that came out this year or do you really mean the CSL M3?

I was trying to tell you that BMW has made 3 different SMG transmissions. The current E46 M3 only comes with SMG II.

Good luck with your purchase and also I forgot to welcome you to the board.

Seriously you say you can afford any car listed, are enrolled at UCLA, but you cannot make your own decision on which car to buy? [joke]

Drive them, weight the pros and cons of each, than get what you want! Good luck and let us know what you decide. By the way I did cast my vote, M3 w/SMG!

Hye do you guys think its worth waiting for that 2007 M3 to come out....?

I heard that people are not so happy with the new 3 series design and think that the M3 is going to look like it too. I kind of like the look but it looks too cheap for me. What do you guys think the MSRP might be thanks alot.

I went on on thursday and test drived the cars with my dad. My dad ended up buying a 745Li for himself and I have not made my decision yet pretty sad huh lol [rofl]
