MyHarley, thats exactly all youd need is a point and shoot. What i found to be the case is a noise (iso) issue and clarity.
The noise thing can be dealt with by finding a quality camera, anything other than a plastic, "off the Best Buy shelf" camera. Kodak might have some good highend cams, but their lower end selection is shameful.
Clarity and focus, i believe can be better found with any cam with a good size lense. Anything larger than the diameter of a dime. (a large amount of optical (not digital) zoom can be a good thing, but not necessary)

These are 3 meg pixel cams that i suggest you compare and pick from. They all look promising, just gotta pick the one that suits your needs and taste. And if you like a certian model of cam, you can might be able to find that same cam in a higher or lower pixel rating.
-Nikon Coolpix 3100 (i've used this one, pretty nice)
-Olympus D-560
-Kodak CX6330
-Canon PowerShot A70 (my brother has this one, great camera, small, heavy tho)
-Fuji FinePix F410 (kinda pricey, but looked promising)

Review them here:

MyHarley, once you are ready to buy, http://beachcamera.com/ should have the best price, but you can check at http://www.nextag.com/
I got my $500 camera for $330

epj3, mine has all the options yours has, just comes in a smaller package [:D]

Personally, I prefer those really compact digital cameras, to keep in my car. I love digital cameras, but I only want to take a picture when I just need the memory or something...usually I find that I need a digicam at the spur of the moment. And I prefer a camera that will take great pictures without me having to manually adjust. I'm also not very critical on picture quality and featuers...it has to take good pictures, but I don't need nearly the best. So I want to get the Minolta Dimage Xt...it's an ultra-compact for like $300 and does what I need it to do:
MyHarley, you should check it out, it may be the camera you are looking for as well:

epj3, yeah, mine doesnt have anything like a zoom yours does.

MrElussive, i dont mean to diss your choice on cameras, but that camera is aweful.
Images are too warm and dark and it cant correct for abmormal lighting. Extreme amount of vignetting (dark corners) and ghosting is another issue. I think its because that folded optical thing. One last thing, the battery life is real short. Minolta hast come out with a decent digi yet. Thats why it wasnt in my suggestion list.

Fuji and Canon have tiny cameras that are pretty good.
Sorry mate, i believe in doing research before droping a big penny on something.
I HATE being dissatisfied with my purchase!!!!

Oh, let me mention this about batteries on a camera!
Find a camera that has the power issu thought out.

Do NOT buy a camera that needs a proprotary battery UNLESS they supply the charger.
Even if its AA, they should have something for you.

The first Kodak i had used AA's, but they had a charger for it, that was the best system! The next one i got used some crazy battery that wasnt rechargable and was $16 for each one and they didnt even last long. This new cam im getting has a charger coming with it, and since i found it under such a deal, i spent $60 on another bat.

x, the Minolta Dimage Xi/Xt received CNet's highest rating of 8.0 for an Ultracompact Digicam. As for the short battery life, I don't really mind...it comes with a rechargeable battery, and like I said, I am not really into photography. I just like to take pics when I need to. But I will certainly look into what Canon has to offer. I am specifically looking for an ultracompact for $300.

I'm looking at the Canon Digital Rebel SLR. Yea it's a thousand bucks, but instead of buying a crappy cam every two years I'd prefer one really nice one that'll last. Plus I like control, I cannot stand point and shoot cams at all!

I currently have a pretty old 2.3mp Sony camera. Let me tell you this, besides the image quality 1600/1200 (for that time, more than 3 years ago) it sucks big time. First of all, there is no optical zoom and the lens is at least 2x smaller than a penny. There is almost no control over the picture and it drains the battery very fast even if it's NOT turned on, have to take out the bat and carry with me untill I want to take pics and yes I did get a new battery. The two good things about it are, it's small and the lens can be turned 180 degrees, so you can take a picture of yourself while looking at yourself in the lcd. It's so old that it can be connected via a serial port only and transferring pictures is a major pain, that is the reason why I only use a 16mb memory stick. Also, my dad droped it on pavement and the only thing saved it was the nice steel finish. It took a serious hit and since then the mic stopped working (not really but you can hardly hear anything with the pc speakers at max). All in all its a nice camera for something that is 3 years old but the bat life is annoying, not beying able to change anything except for shutter speed and the slow transfer rate really sucks. I think I'll open it up to see what is the mic situation and if I break it, the new ones are much better and cost about the same as this one 3 years ago (got it for $400 (at www.J&R.com , sony reliesed a new model and J&R had to get rid of the old ones) when everyone else was selling it for $750+). If I do get a new one I would look for long battery life and many control features especially manual focus.

How ironic, i got my camera and took pics, i just cant show you guys.

Oh, I love it!!! i have been only able to do some point and shoot, sun was gone and there were too many mosquitoes out to bother.

i will have my server back up in a few hours.

This pic is from the shore line of the mississippi in memphis, i resized it to fit the max file size and to show you guys what the original scene was, youll see the detail of the original later.
