Here is my solution to you buddy ...
Get the X5. and if you really need the power of the M3 ... get the 4.6is or upcoming V8 4.8is. I drive BMW M3 and bit of a pain right now. I live in the Middle East so no issue of snow. But after driving it for a year .... tend to get bored of it. How many times can you drive your car at 300kmh and race with every tom dick and harry. Get the X5 ... you will enjoy it a lot more. And people around you would look at it more than the M3 ... trust me!

You mean, in the way that people look at an elephant more than a panther... [;)]

I live in Germany and it has snowed here at least every other week. I drive almost 150km per day to and from work in my RWD BMW and I have never ever had a hard time driving it or even noticed that it handles WORSE than a FWD car. I am no expert but the fact that BMW's have the ASC (or DSC in America) helps in those situations where the road is a little to icey for quick braking. But the Germans drive their M3's, Porsches, and Audi's everyday rain, snow, or shine......I dont think it is a problem as long as you: DRIVE RELEVANT TO THE WEATHER CONDITIONS. That is the biggest issue when driving any car be it FWD, AWD, or RWD.
And in answer to the original question: YES!!!!!!!

I still think that on any RWD car the tires are the most important component. Performance tires will get you stuck in any type of snow.

I definitely agree. A set of good snow tires is a must for an RWD in the snow.
