Dude if someone gave me a ///M3 w/ SMG I'd ****in be the happiest guy around.

Selling it [bash] crazy thing to say.

I dunno if I got an M3 I'd go w/ SMG I'm starting to like it more and more after all the things I've read about it, but then again I have to try it to see if I really like it. [:o]

own opinion.. although somewhat ridiculous that you'd get rid of it because its not a stick???? c'mon - a new M3 SMG would be a significant step up from an E-34 535 - just the technology alone is light years ahead of what it was 13 years ago.

Also.. and this will be the end of my side of the smg vs. stick arguement (discussion).

Being that we're all BMW enthusiasts and M aficionados... I believe we would all agree that M engineers are at the top of their game with regard to building and understanding what works at the 'elite performance' level..

M3's since their inception have not needed an introduction and are accepted across the board as being THE standard for their class and which all competitors in their class strive to be... agreed??

ok.. that being said.... the M engineers take the near perfect vehicle and do it one better - enter the M3 CSL.

they lighten the car by adding carbon fiber - tweak the engine and exhaust for more horsepower - get rid of any weight adding tech that's not needed...... and they could have gone with a lighter, more traditional transmission. Yet, they chose to go with the SMG.

if its such a horrible transmission why would M put it into their flagship 3 to showcase? why would M risk putting their reputation on the line by using a gimmick product in a car that's essentially a turnkey GT racer? these guys are geniuses in their field.. if anyone thought SMG was a bad idea I'm sure one of their crew would be the first one to say it. wouldn't you agree?

alright then - i'm done....

My take is that they did not put the conventional 6MT in the M3 CSL primarily because it's a limited-production model. The cost of the CSL is prohibitive as it is. It would have been even more expensive to make both 6MT and SMG available. Now the question is why SMG instead of 6MT? I'd imagine it's because (1) like you say, SMG is a technolical showcase for BMW, and (2) SMG is more foolproof than 6MT.

your car, you decide.
ya that. and id sell it, to cut my losses and buy a 3-pedaled versio, not to dismiss the car as trash or anything, but theres otehr people out there that want smg and im not one of them. maybe trade it is a better word.

my feeling is the perfectly fast shifts u get out the smg wont do u any good on the street, so might as well have some fun with the feel of a proper mechinical clutch and stick.

though u have like 6 options or whatnot for smg some times ur in the slow one or auto and u wanna shift fast, or otehr way round, unlike when u drive an indy car or a challege stradale, where there is only one manner in which u drive, all those modes of smg seem like a hassle.

ive only driven my dads manual m3, never an smg so ya i guess myu word isnt really worht anything but whatever.

They are both cool. It all depends on what you like. If I had to decide, it would be a very hard decsion. I love my E36 M3 sedan 5-speed, I would give it up in a second. If a could afford a E46 M3. I know you guys that have them are really enjoying. Don't get me wrong here the E36 M3 was and is one of the best cars on Earth. So I am happy.
