The S14 is dual row chain driven. Belts breaking on non-interference engines ie: ford escort are no big deal. Nothing collides. On most performance high compression engines there is valve-piston interference and breakage usually results in at least half of the valves being bent depending on engine speed at the time.
When timing chains stretch the cam timing is retarded and on cars like the MB2.3-16 and the E30 M3, they rattle at startup.
