watch out with the monitor

my friend has an 03 M3 conv.. he had the car for a couple of months and the tire pressure light kept coming on and off he checked his tires.. everything looked fine.. pressure etc... this went on for a week, on and off.... as he was driving on a highway down to the shore, cruising at a nice 90mph or so.. the light came on... he didn't think anything of it.. about two mins later... the tire blew, shredded.. luckily nothinghappened to him.. he pulled over. roadside picked up the car.. checked everything and he got a new tire... he had the dealer check everything to make sure the other tires were ok too. they said everything was fine.. maybe a nail or something in the one that was blown..
the following weekend, heading to the shore again... light comes on... he assumed it was something electrical as he had just gotten the car from the shop.. a few mins later... BOOM!! rear left tire goes out, shredded. no accident, but the tire pieces scratched up the side of his car...
the dealer replaced all four tires just in case afterwards.... he hasn't had any problems since.. but told me that the tire pressure light doesn't just go off for no reason... he can attest... get the tires checked if it does come on... could have been much worse than some scratches and lost time....

Thats the kind of stuff that worries me. My tires are barely a year old, Conti's, haven't had a problem with them at all. But like you said when the light goes off, its a reason to pay attention. Since they "fixed" the car, it hasn't come on since. What is hard for me is that my husband does not like my M and uses it as an opportunity to slam. Can you imagine? So, when there is a problem, I am on my own. Thank goodness for nice people who appreciate beautiful machinery!

You know I changed my rear tires a few weeks ago on my Z4 and it goes off about twice a week, I've talked to a couple dealers and they said if you get the tires just a litle low for a long period of time they will go off - but I check my pressure at least every other day.

I don't know.....

went off a lot today

i just switched from my oem winter rims to my chromes for the summer. they look absolutely gorgeous.. as soon as i switched though, the tire monitor kept coming on. i figured that i needed to fill the tires anyway since they've been sitting for 6 months. so i went and had them checked... they were pretty much fine.... didn't really need air.. so i reset the monitor... but everytime i restart the car.. the monitor goes off.. not sure why this is... the tires seem fine. i inspected them before putting them back on... has this happened to anyone else?

Have the dealer check for any error codes, you may have to have everything master reset, which is what they did for me, mine did not show any error codes and was doing something similar. Since the reset, its been fine.
