All the thriving stray & feral cats out there pretty much answer that question. They can handle cold temperatures for a few days as long as they get food. A house cat that gets left out overnight by mistake isn't going to die. If they get cold, they are smart enough to find a sheltered place to huddle up. Just hope it's not in your engine compartment!
My dog barks to go outside at night all times of the year. She will snoop around the (fenced in) yard for 15 - 20 minutes, then lay on the deck for an hour or two until she barks & wants to come in, even if the temperature is below freezing. Her choice.
