Got Into An Accident...

Yeah, I just did some research. This other guy did the same thing I did, but with his right rear wheel. His repair total came out to freaking $8,000 but he needed two new rims ($900 each, $1,800 total) and two new tires ($270 each, $540 total). Since I don't need any new rims or tires, I am off the hook for about $2,300 but that still puts me in the $5K-$6K range worth of repairs. [:(] And the worst part is, the left rear suspension won't be 100% back to normal....more like 90% back. Because the suspenion isn't designed to bend left and right much and the wheel is slanted at an angle, like this "\". So basically, I am pretty much royally screwed.
I hope that somehow, miraculously, the repairs aren't that much and I get my car back mad quick. I just do not feel complete without my car. [V]
2,300 miles and I have permanently messed up this car...I feel like the worst G35 owner in the world...all my hand-washing, wheel-wiping, garage-parking, etc. was all worthless thanks to what I did to it today. [V]

Yeah man, just be thankful that you are alive and able to walk away from the accident!! It is just a car when you think about it and it can be fixed but of the whole thing what sucks the most is the inconvienence it is going to cause and the money aspect of fixing but still it is just a car!

Okay, so it looks like I'm going to have to pay for the damages. My parents aren't too happy today and they don't want my insurance to go up, so they are going to pay for the repairs, but I have to pay them back, which means I need to get a week-end job. I can't believe this....for one stupid move, I have to pay $5,000+...that would have been great money for mods.

MrElussive,

Glad to hear you and your buddy are ok. Having pranged my beloved '89 Mustang 5.0 after I first got it I know exactly what you’re feeling. [?|] But having worked my share of injury accidents as a First Responder and crawled away from my own near fatal rollover, I can say that as long as you and your buddy are ok, that’s all that really matters.

I do have a question for you.

You said “Now this instantaneous pedal to the metal made the back wheels spin and it put me sideways into like a power-slide. As soon as this started happening, I slammed on the brakes as hard as I could, but it was too late and I was well into a juicy slide and I had no control and it was the worst feeling in the world.”

In hindsight do you think a dynamic traction control systems would have prevented the loss of control or at least lessened the impact? I’m not trying to imply anything; I’m just interested in the post accident analysis.

Regards,
[cheers]

Good question, good catch. When I started driving, I turned off the traction control. I do this in case I take 1st gear to redline and drop it in 2nd, the wheelspin won't make traction control cut my power off. So in this situation I punched it going into the turn and the back end spun out and my traction control wasn't on to save my ass. I truly believe that if I left the traction control on, it would have caught my error and cut off the power and applied the brakes to the rear wheels accordingly (as it usually does). All in all, I am never turning my traction control off again.

Sorry to hear about your accident. The G35 is a great car. It's always very sad when you wreck your baby.

Don't be so sure you won't need new tires and rims. It doesn't take much to ruin the belts on the tires or bend a rim ever so slightly. Hopefully not!!

Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

I hope that G35 parts are not too scarce. I have heard horror stories about popular new cars in accidents being without parts for some time.

Not a bad spot for my usual driving school plug. I don't know if you could have saved it, but a few days on a wet parking lot may have helped. If nothing else, you would learn more about how your traction control helps in some situations and not in others.

Getting a job is a good thing, even though it will probably suck. It is good to broaden one's perspective on the value of things, in ways that being given everything simply cannot. I think your parents have the right idea in making you pay for your accident.

I don't mean to be harsh or anything, but value is found in struggle and you gotta start sometime. [;)]

I am now officially old at 26. [?|]

Yeah, I understand paying for my damages, but it gets hard because I am a full-time college student...it is hard to balance that and work at the same time. Today we talked about it and my parents firmly said to drive more carefully and to slow down and blah, blah, blah. But I figure that if I have to pay for my raised insurance (from my speeding ticket) and for the repairs of my accident, then I should drive my car however I want. My parents want me to drive like a freaking grandma, but that's just not going to happen.
My dad wants me to take one of those driving school classes, so I am going to sign up for BMW CCA in NJ and see how that goes but I really feel it is just abuse to put my car on a race track or whatever and just rip it up like that. At least public roads usually keep me in line (being afraid of tickets, accidents, etc. and all)...putting myself on a racetrack will bring out the maniac in me, but who knows, I will give it a try...it may get my driving aggression out of my system.
I really just want my car back ASAP...it's been gone for only 1 day and a half ad I am already super depressed. [V]
Btw, brahtw8, you're 26 years old?

Was this is a residential neighborhood? If so I would be pissed to if someone drove that way to even put him or her in that kind of predicament in a residential neighborhood. I have kids that play outside and someone came down my road fast enough to loose control so bad as to do a 180-degree spin and end up on a curb. I would be upset as well. There are place to be driving you car in 35MPH in 1st gear (hell especially without the traction control off) and a residential neighborhood is not one of them.

I am happy both of you escaped without injuries. That’s about the only thing good that came out of this.

Sounds pretty smart on you dads part. That is good advise I would recommend you taking.

P.S. As long as your parents are paying the $630 month payments, I believe they DO have some say in the way you drive that car. And in light of you're accident driving like "freaking grandma" a little more, especially on public roads, would be a very good idea. It all sounds like your parents are being hard on you, but if you were to hurt someone else in an accident due to you not wanting to drive a little more like "freaking grandma" a bent axel and rim would be the least of your worries. I am not trying to be harsh, but to many people with the attitude of "its my car and I will drive anyway I want" or "I am a good driver so I don't need to slow down" is an attitude waiting for disaster. There are many people in jail at this moment on murder/manslaughter charges for killing someone (when they are deeply remorseful and sorry), because they never thought their actions would put them there.

Whos paying for the car?

If it is your parents they have every right to make you pay for the damage and to tell you that you should drive slow and be more carefull, they didnt damage the car you did. So you damaged there car. My brother when he had his huge wreck hes car was totalled. My parents didnt have to give him another car but they did. He was saposed to have his original car put in his name in about 2 weeks. God knows when my old tahoe will actually be his. My oarents where lucky because they came out making $$ on the whole thing because it totalled for more than what they owed on it. You just lost part off your freedom and your parents will prob. question everywhere you drive from now on. Have fun.

I understand that, but the guy had no reason to be pissed. He came OUT of his house to run after us...he probably barely saw/heard what was going on...he was just jumping to stupid conclusions. He stopped running after us after I started driving away with my car all lop-sided...I think he realized that it was all just truly an accident and that I never meant any disrespect to the road so he chilled out. He probably saw me fly by through his window going sideways and thought I was trying to do some kind of racing move or something, I don't even know.
Either way, I never ever do anything stupid when I have passengers in the car, and that is when I do act like a "grandma" (I often take my 7-year old bro around for a drive, for example). This time, my friend wanted me to drive hard and I thought I was driving hard while still being safe, but I simply over-estimated myself on that turn.
I got my car to have some fun, while still being safe. That is like my personal guideline for driving around...have fun, but never endanger others. In this case, I did not do that and I paid for it. I don't think I deserve what happened to me/my car, especially now because I have mad tests coming up in school and now I have to worry about getting my car fixed and then paying for it and blah blah blah. Since I have all this shit to deal with now, I refuse to be afraid of of DRIVING my car as soon as I get back into it. Driving that car makes me feel good and I'm not going to take that away from myself.

It's nice to hear you own up to the accident. This will be a good lesson learned (god knows we all have been there). I hope you get your car back a soon as possible. It's good you wont let the accident make you timid to drive once you get it back. So many people after an accident get more timid after that once they get back on the road they are more dangerous, because of paranoia. I hope you wont have to work to many weekend to pay for the repairs, but it sounds like you're in for some long weekends.

OOh i have midterms this week[:(]

Theres nothing like having a car then giveing it up for something that wasnt what you where promised thats when you really feel shitty.

Or being promissed that you would get something if you move and then not getting it after the fact.

All in all glad you are ok and good luck on getting you car back and best of luck on the test.

I need to go to bed i have a school trip to HEB tom..
