My car ran hot too. Plus I bought it as a n00b. It didnt even have an aux fan when I bought it. I made a 5 series one work and bought a new temp switch, thermostat, waterpump, antifreeze (make sure you get the stuff safe for aluminum engines), fan clutch, and shroud (it was missing). Runs awesome now. But even in traffic I never hear the aux fan come on. I know it does tho because I jumped out the wires. Maybe my guage is off and it never really gets that hot. Do your guys E30's temp guage kinda float between 2 points, like the needle never really sits still like on newer cars?

Mine does exactly that. It's normal, don't worry. My temp gauge creeps up towards the middle in traffic (but never goes past the middle) and settles back before the mid-line when I have airflow.

AAH - the memory on the clock! THANK YOU! I don't believe I hadn't figured that one out.

As for the heat - the thing is unconfortably hot, IMO. It heats up to over halfway up in normal operation, and goes almost to the red in traffic before I blast the heat. (Will blasting the AC have the same effect fan-cooling-wise?)

I'm going to replace the thermostat with one of those low temp thermostats this weekend, if it isn't too difficult to do. If that doesn't do the trick, any idea if the fan clutch is hard to replace?
