Why is it on the official BMW site, they compare the M3 to the z06, but in real life they arent even in the same class. Maybe they are comparing the euro M3 to the Z06, wouldnt the Euro kill the Z06 in real life? If not then waht about the CSL? Shouldnt the CSL our performe a Z06?

They are the same class... The M3 is a sports car... and in acceleration they are exactly the same, and in handling the m3 is better.

The M3 0-60 is 4.8 Seconds maybe someone can get it to do 4.2. However, the Z06 does 3.9 Seconds 0-60. And its reaches its Top speed faster then the M3. So i think the Corvette is a class higher.

Nope, take it on a track, the m3 is going to beat it by just a little.

The corvette's top speed (from factory) is, i believe, 36 miles per hour more than the M3. The m3 has short gear ratio's for it's higher end, which is why on a track, the M3 will accelerate faster out of corners than a Vette.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I think the vette is awesome, but just because it is fast, doesn't take away the fact that it's made by GM, with (recent) GM quality [thumbd]

Dude I don't fully agree with you on that. The Corvette is 200lbs lighter than the M3 and there are two models: the 350hp standard version and the 405hp Z06 version. I think the Z06 will take the M3 just because it's packing a lot more horsepower, although these high revvers (such as in the M3) really fly at high speeds!!

Try reading some car and driver (or other automobile magazines). They'll tell you that the M3 is a better car, esp on the track - but the best 'bang for the buck' is the vette. Sure, that's comparing the most recent vettes (the last ones with the popup head lights)... Comparing the new, more powerful vette to the current m3 is kind of stupid. Wait till bmw comes out with the new M3... it'll blow away the vette. Kind of like the E55 AMG blew away the e39 m5, but the new m5 will blow away the e55 amg.

C&D prefers BMW because they have their hand in BMW's back pocket. And the M3 probably IS a better track car, it's such a serious race car. The Vette is more about raw power and a stiff suspension, but its overall profile allows it to handle amazingly well on the track. I'd take an M3 over a Corvette ANY day of the week, but you gotta admit that the Z06 demands respect.

I didn't say that it's not a capable car, I just said that vette vs. m3, you're getting a more refined and perfect car with a BMW. No vette can rev to nearly 8,000 rpm.... like the M5's V8.

I put the SVT Cobra, Regular Corvette, and M3 all in the same class.

No idea why they would compare it with the Z06 since it would spank the M3 in pretty much every category other than luxury.

Fully agree w/Tom on this one. I would say an M3 has a reasonable chance with a Reg Vette or a Cobra in most scenario's.....The Z06 I believe, would be very very tough to overcome with an M3 - stock vs. stock...imo. [headbang]

The key word here: Regular. As in Regular corvette.

epj3, the comparison for this thread is Z06 vs M3.

Like it or not the Z06 performs with the best of the elite sports-cars out there; refined or not.

On the track, which the Z06 is a track car, the Z06 will out perform our M3s.

I really don't think the M3 will even come close to the zo6(base vette..yes) on a racetrack..but then again who cares..It's all about how the car feels getting there..and yes the vette is fun to drive but the M3 is so utterly satisfying to drive fast..it's what really counts in everyday driving.

Yeah, that's what I was saying before. The Z06 is a better performer and a faster car on the race track (or in a straight line), but the M3 is far more satisying.

I wouldn't put the SVT Cobra in the M3 vs Z06 category. The SVT Cobra is just fast in a straight line...its handling and braking is nothing impressive at all. The SVT Cobra is a sports car but more specifically, it is part of that very narrow "muscle car" genre.

The SCCA classes ALL C5 (1997+) Corvettes, including the ZO6, as Super Stock. Other cars in this class include the Viper, Porsche 911 Turbo, Porsche 911/996 and the Lotus Esprit.

The E46 M3 and the M5 are classed as A Stock, along with Cobra SVT, C4 and ZR1 Corvette, Porsche 911/993, and Boxster S.

Sorry guys, but the stock Z06 will kick the stock M3's butt on any track EXCEPT a very tight AutoX course. In that case the M3 has the advantage due to smaller size and better handling. I have seen it myself.

When the new M3 is released, I'll bet that it is classed in Super Stock.

Thanks for the clarification but I was talking engines (which is what "RPM" is used for.)

Thanks.

That's what i said too. BMW won't allow the vette to out perform their sports cars.

Just a pity that the New M3 won't be released until late 2007. And the c6 vette is already here. Sounds like Chevy could make even more vast improvements in that time frame. This is a constant on going cat and mouse game. However...raw power? Nothing beats the MB cl65AMG...nothing stock at least.

Eh? Isn't there more to a car than pure speed? I'd love to have something stripped down like a lotus 7, it would rock ANY current sports car in ANY way - but there's not a whole lot of practicality in it.
