That is impressive, but it was designed to be a convertible from Day 1, and not a Coupe that was chopped and reinforced after it was already in production. I think the structural rigidity is pretty close for the two. Recall the C5 Coupe was sort of a convertible, with the limited production hardtop being the most rigid C5 available.
Yeah, they designed the C5 as a convertible from the beginning to avoid the complete disaster of a car that the C4 convertible was. Since the C6 is improved in just about every regard over the C5, it isn't suprising that the convertible is very rigid. However, I'm still very impressed to see those kinds of numbers from a convertible, and an "affordable" one at that.

You certainly have a valid point on the uninformed, marque-centrist attitude that permeates this forum and car forums in general.

You just put into words, what I've been trying to say for quite some time. [cheers]

I don't think the M3 has a chance vs. the C6. the Dec 2004 issue of Car and Driver pits the C6 vs. the Porche 911 Carrera. The C6 is about Brute raw power and performance from a 6.0 liter pushrod v-8 ( 40+ yr old technology ). 400 horses, 400 lb-ft of torque. The 0-60 is a scant 4.1 and the lateral G at .98. Pretty much beat the Porche in just about all performance categories.

by the way did anyone read the "Speed" magazine by Road and Track. Pretty cool :)

A guy over at Roadfly has a Z4 and a new C6. He wrote a VERY long comparision of the two. I realize we were talking M3 vs. Corvette, but this IS AN EXCELLENT review and comparison between the C6 and a BMW. If you have followed this thread here, you will be interested in this comparision.

Nice find and I agree, it is an excellent write up. It's funny that he complains about the exact same things as I do in regards to the shifting and clutching of my M. Maybe because I came from the GM world [scratch] .

After hearing more about the next generation of Z06, I think I'll skip the C06 and try to grab the C6 Z06 in '06 [pray]

That or a Buick GN. (If you don't know, you better ask somebody)

Buick Grand National? Sarcasm? I like the car, but that compared to a C6 is a joke. Are they making a new GN?! [???1]

Nope, being dead serious.

"The 1987 Buick GNX was the ultimate sleeper - its turbocharged 3.8 liter V6 put out an underrated 276 hp @ 4400 rpm and 360 lb-ft of torque @ 3000 rpm. The car could run the 1/4 mile in the low 13's and was rumored to be in the 12's with the right track conditions and altitude. The GNX was produced in limited quantities, however. Only 547 were ever made, and at a price of nearly $30,000 was not typically a car that many people could afford. "

I'm not comparing one to the other. Like the article says, the GN is the ultimate sleeper. I already have an M so I don't need a car for the twisties and I've always wanted a GNX. Also, if I went the Z06 route, I'd might get rid of the M. I know, I have issues [screwy] [:D]

I owned an M3 and drove my friend's C6 coupe. C6 convertibles to the best of my knowledge aren't available yet. On the street from a roll, the C6 will blow past the M3 with ease. The reason? Torque. Both the M3 and C6 are about the same weight, but the C6 has 400 lb - ft of torque and the M3 has 262 lb - ft of torque. The Z06 has 405 HP and torque and will also blow past an M3 on the street from a roll. On the track, the M3 should be a lot more competitive, but I'd still give the edge to the C6 and Z06.

As far as technology is concerned, I don't give a dam about how old the technology is in a Vette. It's results that matter to me. If it's faster and less expensive, that's a positive. If it's slower and more expensive, that's a negative.

Thank you!!! I agree. Lots of people here like to say that the technology is old and crappy - pushrods, no variable valve timing, "leaf springs," etc. Well, some of the technology is old - but it is proven. And, it provides the performance numbers. That's what matters. Saying that your car is better simply because it has variable valve timing and stuff is no different than "ricer advertisement."

C6 is available on the street. I passed one two weeks ago (opposite directions, I didn't blow off his doors!). Also, a co-worker who is a vette owner stopped in at a local dealer 3 weeks ago and they had one on the floor.

I agree as well. As long as it works, it's fine with me. Look at BMW, they're still using single-piston calipers and really shitty leather but everybody seems to overloook that just because it's "BMW".

I have an M3, but I will definately say the C6 is it, for affordable Brute strength, plus its nicer looking than the C5's, way nicer looking imo. [thumb]

I like my M3 for everyday, but I would like a C6 too....lol !!!

I agree. I think the C6 is dead sexy. Much better proportioned than the C5 and more aggressive looking. I also really like the non-concealed headlights.

I like those new headlights too. But many in the traditional Corvette community are apalled by the change. They think it is blasphemy that a Corvette doesn't have pop-up headlights.

Hmmmm....... sounds like the bimmer community when the new 5 and 7 came out........

This was also the case for Mazda Miata fans when the same change was made. I would hate to be sitting on a newer C5 after seeing the C6 - I am sure many are remorsefull about their recent say 2002-2004 C5 purchases [xx(] .

Oh well, just my opinion.

I have much respect for the S2000. They are awesome little buggers but it won't beat an M3. They might not need binoculars to see the M3's tail lights but it will not beat it

Holy thread resurrection . . .

But seriously folks, lets be more specific.

If by 'beat', you mean on an autox course, the S2K can beat an M3. In a straight line, an E46 is going to be faster, but an E36 is pretty close stock (assuming the S2k owner doesn't care about his clutch and launches above 5k RPM).
